Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 1/2 cup butter or shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Beat butter, egg, sugars, and vanilla together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add dry ingredients, blend well.
  4. Stir in nuts and chips.
  5. Drop from teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheet, 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
  7. Makes slightly less than four dozen cookies.

For Oatmeal cookies, follow above recipe but with 2/3 cup flour instead of 1 cup, and omit nuts. Add 1 cup of quick-cooking rolled oats instead, at the same time as the chocolate chips.

For Coconut cookies, follow above recipe, adding 1 cup of fine-grated coconut in place of chopped nuts.
